Independence Day Concert
Time:
   8 pm
Location:
US Capitol, Capitol Hill - West Lawn
Washington, DC

Erich Kunzel will conduct the National Symphony Orchestra's annual Independence Day concert, which will feature patriotic music and a tribute to American composer Richard Rodgers, who was born 100 years ago.

Actor Barry Bostwick ("Spin City," "Grease," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show") hosts the concert. Guest performers include Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, Lee Ann Womack, actor Richard Chamberlain, the Charlie Daniels Band, Metropolitan Opera and La Scala tenor Jerry Hadley, British opera singer Russell Watson and jazz singer Jane Monheit.

Many families pack a picnic for the concert, which concludes with fireworks at the Washington Monument on the other side of the National Mall. The 90-minute concert will be broadcast live on National Public Radio and public television stations.

Security measures for the concert will be identical to the National Memorial Day concert. The entire West Lawn will be fenced in, and gates will not open until 2:30 p.m. Concert-goers must pass through metal detectors at four entry points and may be checked by magnetic wands. Bags, purses and picnic coolers will be hand-searched by Capitol police.

The rain date for the concert is 8 pm Friday, July 5.
